While I have been interested in photography for practically my whole life (and purchased my first DSLR using babysitting money in high school), I definitely didn&#8217;t start my blog using only &#8220;the latest and greatest&#8221; tech. I have slowly invested in my equipment over the years, and let my work pay for my gear, rather than putting $$$ down initially and having to &#8220;earn it back&#8221;. What you\u00a0<em>do<\/em> need is practice, a relatable topic\/subject, and something to capture your work. Don&#8217;t let &#8220;only&#8221; owning a smartphone hold you back from starting to produce quality content!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Buy your camera body and lenses separately<\/strong>. Once you get to the point where you are able to purchase a DSLR or mirrorless camera, I recommend avoiding the &#8220;kits&#8221; that sell a camera body + lens together. The lenses are usually not very good quality. It&#8217;s worth it in the long run to buy the body separately, and invest a little more $ into a lens that you&#8217;ll actually want to use.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rent before you buy!<\/strong> If you are deciding between two similar products or are not 100% sold on an equipment investment, try renting it out first through sites like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lensrentals.com\/?gclid=Cj0KCQiAyoeCBhCTARIsAOfpKxjrLFmAVOtDPXxY-m2_cA0dF7eI3Sf209JQoJQiKKX4X_Lw_P6QyqUaAmiLEALw_wcB\">LensRentals<\/a> (or see if there&#8217;s a local rental spot near you).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Secondhand<\/strong> is always a great option if you are on a budget &#8211; search sites like Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, or even Ebay for gently used photography equipment. I would recommend purchasing in-person vs. having an item shipped to you, just so you can test it out to ensure that it works.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>PHOTOGRAPHY &amp; VIDEOGRAPHY GEAR<\/h3>\n<h5>CAMERA BODIES<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3egJSb8\" rel=\"nofollow\">Canon EOS 5D Mark IV<\/a>:\u00a0<\/strong>I use this camera for all of my photography. This camera is a hefty investment, but the crisp image quality is worth it for me.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2OoHWCA\" rel=\"nofollow\">Canon EOS 80D:<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>this was my\u00a0<em>first<\/em> blogging camera, and it&#8217;s a good one! It&#8217;s still not <em>in<\/em>expensive, but it&#8217;s a little more affordable than the 5d Mark IV. I love how this camera has a flip screen that can rotate in pretty much any direction you need. I use this camera for all of my vlogs and videography. I used to use it for all of my photography until I upgraded camera bodies.\u00a0<strong><em>Note:\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Canon no longer, makes this body, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3qgmPzL\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>EOS 90D<\/strong><\/a> is considered the newer equivalent body.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>***<\/strong><\/em> I would highly recommend purchasing 1 extra battery per camera body. That way you can always keep one charged and never have to stop shooting when a battery runs out!<\/p>\n<h5>LENSES<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2O9lttk\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>Canon 24-70mm f\/2.8L II:<\/strong> <\/a>If you are looking for a good all-around lens for both photo and video, I&#8217;d recommend this one. I predominantly use this lens for my videography now, but use it for photos occasionally. Zoom lenses are said to have slightly less crisp focus that &#8220;still&#8221; lenses, but I personally don&#8217;t notice a huge difference.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3sRJiod\" rel=\"nofollow\">Canon 50mm f\/1.2L:<\/a><\/strong> I use this lens for overhead and angled shots of the food when I want to show more of the scene and setup, not just one bowl or plate in particular.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/38dUuDW\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>Canon 100mm f\/2.8L Macro:<\/strong><\/a> This is my favorite food photography lens because it really zooms in and highlights the small details in the subject matter.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/30dJG4g\" rel=\"nofollow\">Canon 16-35mm f\/2.8L III:<\/a> <\/strong>\u00a0I use this wide-angle zoom lens only for vlogs; if you are only filming recipe content, I don&#8217;t think you need this one.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>*** <\/em><\/strong>When you purchase a lens, I would highly recommend purchasing a lens filter as well. This is a piece of high-quality glass that screws onto the end of your lens. This way if you accidentally scratch your lens, you only need to replace an affordable piece of glass, not a thousand dollar lens.<\/p>\n<h3>OTHER GEAR I USE<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3rnuptw\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>Memory Cards<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3c4qRpR\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>Tripod<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3rlbWOv\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>C-Stand<\/strong> <\/a>(for overhead video)<\/li>\n<li><strong>5-Way Diffusers:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3kQm9zV\" rel=\"nofollow\">regular<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3c5V9bF\" rel=\"nofollow\">giant<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/30gB5xJ\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>Grey Card for White Balance<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Photography Backgrounds:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capturebylucy.com\/\">Capture by Lucy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/38eaaap\" rel=\"nofollow\">Bessie Bakes Backdrops<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ericksonsurfaces.com\/collections\/new-classic\">Erikson Woodworks<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/30j1qLv\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>Shotgun Microphone<\/strong> <\/a>(for vlogs)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3edUhnS\"><strong>USB Microphone<\/strong><\/a> (for voiceovers)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3uVgRaW\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>Ring Light\u00a0<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Filming Lights:<\/strong> I actually do not recommend my filming lights; they were overpriced and I am not totally happy with their color quality. It&#8217;s how I learned to shoot with flash, and I highly recommend it.
